Inscribed on verso of frame in an early 19th Century hand: 'By "Richard Cosway" a very celebrated miniature artist at the end of the last century. He was paid 50 pounds for it', and with information about the sitter, Charlotte Mainwaring-Ellerker (d.1802), Baroness de Ferrers, who became Countess of Leicester after marrying George Townshend (1753-1811), 2nd Marquess Townshend in 1777.
