Circa 1840s, a family portrait depicting two brothers and two sisters, possibly members of the prominent Tappan family of New England (some of whom were silk merchants in New York), no apparent signature; the canvas with a New York weaver's stamp, stretcher inscribed in pencil, "Tapp__"; in a later frame
Condition
Small tear upper margin, dirty varnish; UV reveals a few spot retouches here and there, with the girl on the left showing the largest amount of restoration in the painting -- her neck and cheeks largely retouched. The boy on the left also has some restoration on his forehead and jawline. The two children on the right are largely untouched.
