The Madonna della seggiola
after the original in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, painted in tondo (appx. 29 in. diameter); in an impressive gilt-carved frame dating to the early 20th Century
oil on panel
h. 30 w. 29-3/4 in. (panel) overall dimensions: 45 x 45 x 4 in.
Provenance: Estate of the late Elizabeth Luther, N.Y.C. proceeds to be donated to Old Sturbridge Village Museum, Sturbridge, MA
Condition: fine craquelure throughout, areas of alligatoring in the negative space below Christ's feet and left of the Madonna's shoulder; UV reveals retouches in these spots, at the ball of the chair, a small spot in the Madonna's hair, and another to the right of that; two expansion (hairline) splits in wood partially extend into the panel but appear contained, the left one of these (left of Madonna's headdress) has been retouched
